Do you understand Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are the current hot topic, but do you really know what apprenticeships are and the differences between different models?

In broad terms, apprenticeship refers to any arrangement where an individual (apprentice) gains instruction or training in a trade or craft. There are formal and informal apprenticeships in the U.S. and around the world. "Apprenticeship" is often used interchangably with "on-the-job training".

According to the U.S. Department of Labor: "Apprenticeships combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction to prepare workers for highly-skilled careers." When the term "registered" apprenticeship is used, they typically mean that the apprenticeship is registered at the state and/or federal levels. In order for an apprenticeship to be registered in Hawaii, they must meet certain standards and remain in compliance.

In theory, any! Prior to wide-spread formal education, most professions taught their craft through apprenticeships including medicine, law, and architecture. Although some professions have moved to structured, university programs for foundational intellectual knowledge, many vocations can be learned on-the-job. Construction, mechanical, and physical trades are what most people think of first; however, positions such as in education, pharmacy, healthcare, and technology are quickly embracing the apprenticeship model to meet workforce demands.

For registered apprenticeship in Hawaii, you can find information at the State of Hawaii Department of Labor Workforce Development Division. Employers may administer their own apprenticeship programs that are not registered.

Registered apprenticeship programs typically include 2,000 to 8,000 on-the-job hours and classroom training.

Eligibility and requirements to enter an apprenticeship will vary greatly depending upon the sponsor and availability of work.
